While it’s important we take thyroid hormone medication – so we don’t go into a coma – doctors don’t seem to understand the hormone therapy alone doesn’t stop our immune system attacking the thyroid and causing the symptoms you’ve mentioned above. I have Hashimoto’s and Graves’ yay lucky me! It was thought to be very rare to have both when I was first diagnosed. Turns out it was just rarely diagnosed correctly due to the weird roller coaster of symptoms. I was nearly diagnosed with bipolar! Lucky I have a good GP who ordered the full thyroid panel test including autoantibodies, otherwise I would have been treated with antidepressants for my autoimmune thyroiditis. A few years later I was diagnosed with another autoimmune disease by a rheumatologist, a connective tissue / inflammatory arthritis disease. Despite all of this, I was somewhat functional, until Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) came along. Like you, I didn’t realise it was an actual disease. I thought it was ‘only fatigue’ because of the unfortunate name. Yet CFS – more accurately – Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) – has been the most debilitating of all my conditions and treated the least serious by doctors. I’ve been 95% housebound for two years now with no effective treatments. I’ve tried everything from diets to woo woo therapies.
